Continuing a family tradition

We've been quite busy the past few weeks.  Between cheerleading, pool time, and the lake, we've barely stopped!  Summertime is so much fun, and even extra fun with two kiddies getting all kinds of new experiences.  For Independence Day, we decided to go camping on the lake. No, not tent camping, because if you know me, you know I can't rough it. God knew what he was doing by making me live in the 21st century. He knows I couldn't rough it like the pioneers!  We went in our RV. Call me high maintenance, I don't care. I can charge my phone, shower, and even dry my hair in AC. And actually cook a meal more than just hamburgers. Don't get me wrong, it's ok to "rough it". It's just not my thing. I need a real bed if I'm going to be pleasant on an overnight trip. Haha.

Let me tell you about our RV. My father purchased it while I was in high school. He drove it down to work for FEMA for a few months at a time, while we stayed in Knoxville. It was tough having him gone, but he made his way back soon enough. While he worked for FEMA, he lived in the RV. To say it was kind of crazy is an understatement. A motor home?!  Haha, well, Kerry bought it and drove that puppy to the gulf coast for work!  I can't imagine being my mom here in knoxville with four kids and no husband around for a few months at a time. I can't even handle a few nights doing everything when Brandon works late, much less MONTHS. My momma is the best, y'all. So's my dad. Hats off to my amazing parents. They're the sweetest.

Anyways, once dad came back from working, he got this crazy idea to load the entire family of six up in the Holiday Rambler for a month-long trip across the country. My sweet mother just went along with it. I can't imagine packing for a husband, a high school graduate, a freshman, an eight grader, and a kid in elementary school. They were both brave souls!  So, we packed up and headed out. We saw all kinds of great things like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, old Faithful, and much more. The grande finale was a huge fireworks show over Mount Rushmore on July 4th. At the time, I was a teenager that just wished she could spend the summer with her friends. Now, I look back and remember the time my brothers left a dead bird on my car as a prank or dad waking up every morning and cooking us a big breakfast outside on the skillet.

Fast forward to last year. The RV has pretty much sat since dad had his stroke. He offered it to give it to us and Brandon got super excited. I'm not gonna lie, I cringed a little. Haha. But we had a different idea. Instead of driving cross country, we'd just take it to the lake and park it. That way we had the best of both worlds-lake days out on the boat, and a quick trip to the camper instead of having to truck all the way home. Well friends, we chose a campsite a few weeks ago and were able to utilize it for the first time this July 4th weekend. My daddy's 4th of July camping tradition got to live on.

The kids were soooo excited to take a camping trip. They've already had tons of firsts this summer. They had been to the lake, but never in a boat. It's a new fav. So, Friday, we loaded all our junk up and headed up to the lake. Was it hectic?  ....yes. Brandon knows I get worked up when all the kinks aren't worked out, and, well, they hadn't even hooked up the plumbing outside yet. So when I arrived, I kind of had a freak out moment. The fridge wasn't working (or so I thought) and that had me all worked up too. It turns out it did work, just took forever to get cold. I had raw meat, eggs, and milk people!!  It was a dilemma!  Everything was ok though, and the kids couldn't stop smiling. We got to cookout with Brandon's awesome parents Friday night. They were gracious enough to leave their boat for us to use because ours had some mechanical issues. Saturday, some friends came up and we went out on the lake. My mom and dad came out for a cookout that night too. They brought some kiddie fireworks, and Brandon and Chris gave a show for the kids. We roasted marshmallows, mad s'mores, and had a good ole time.

Julie just happened to be in town this weekend, so the kids and I met her at Menchies. We even had the privilege of meeting her new boyfriend. It was a party. We love frozen yogurt!  I love spending time with my bestie. We may not see each other all the time, but we pick right up where we left off when we do see each other. I was so, so glad to share some yogurt and get a hug from her today. It was also the first time she met the kids!  By the time we left, Laiken was playing school with both of them and Issak was laughing with them.

Laiken kept talking about having a tea party all weekend, so tonight we had a nice sit-down dinner. We tend to eat together a few times a week, but sometimes the kids sit at the bar. It's just easier to serve them there. It was so nice to just sit down together and share a meal. We even used fine china (AKA real glasses, dishes, and silverware. Paper is just easier for everyday-use with toddlers.)  Laiken felt like a grown-up with a real glass instead of the typical Hello Kitty plasticware. It was a nice end to a fun-filled weekend. God is so good and we've truly been blessed. Hopefully we are making a difference in their lives. I know they've changed us, and I can only hope that they see more than just fun experiences. I hope they're truly feeling loved in a safe environment.  Also, we've put in a transfer request for Laiken for kindergarten. To all my prayer warriors out there, pray that she gets into the right school where she should be. We should find out if her transfer is approved in the next few weeks.

Here are a bunch of photos from the weekend. Sorry for the overload!  We just had a ton of fun!  Just a few short weeks til we head to the beach!  Words can't describe how pumped the kiddies are about it! Til next time, we'll be roasting marshmallows and basking in the sun on the lake!

Watermelon snack!  (See her shirt?  "My aunt rules". I had to buy it!)

Laiken's first time on a jet ski. She loved it. Our sweet friends let Brandon and I go on a short ride around while they watched the kids for awhile too. Reminded me of the old days when we dated and would spend every moment possible on the lake. It may be our favorite place.

One tired pup. She broke two leashes, one of which was a cable. This girl is STRONG when she gets excited!  She just wants to play with everyone!

We love America!

It was an amazing weekend with my sweet family. Can't wait to make more memories!  Happy 4th of July!  πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

"You're my new mommy, ok?"

Warning:  This post is about my sweet babes. So if you're sick of hearing about the children, just stop reading. I'm becoming THAT mom, who talks about her kids non-stop. This is our new life though, so this is what is consuming us.  I enjoy updating the world about our new adventures.

We've been up to all kinds of things lately.  Trips to Dollywood, the pool, lake, mountains, you name it. It's always fun to watch the kids' expressions when they have a new experience. Part of me is a little sad that it took this long for them to enjoy something as simple as going to a movie theater, but I have learned that I can't dwell on their past. We are just moving forward and loving these babes as much as possible everyday. We cannot give enough hugs, kisses, and "I love you"s to make up for lost time. But we can try.

I have friends doing all kinds of things with their lives. Some are working on their careers.  Others are just married or will be married in a few short months.  One of my college buddies actually adopted a 14 year old recently, and now she, her husband, and son are serving as missionaries in Costa Rica over the summer. Another girl I knew in college worked on a floating cruise-ship-turned-hospital for ten months off the coast of Africa. And then there's us. We have two toddlers and sometimes feel like we are barely treading water.  Some days when I've heard my name yelled one time too many, I get grouchy instead of having a patient heart. At times I am hateful to Brandon about something completely petty that doesn't matter at all because my day at work was awful. But we apologize, hug, and remember to cherish each other because we know at the end of the day, we love each other no matter what.

I've been struggling with myself, feeling that maybe we aren't doing "enough". But what really is enough?  I know we can't do anything on our own, and this is all God working through us. I'm sure I probably beat myself up too much. We were just thrown into this, so we never even had a chance to talk about anything!  Everyday I have thoughts like, "was that punishment too harsh?"  "Maybe I need to just show them more love."  "Why do they randomly become sad and how do I make them happy again?"  Unfortunately, I don't have good answers for any of these questions. Sometimes they ask me questions that I cannot easily answer. I think both Brandon and I are taking each day at a time and are hoping that what we are doing is sufficient to show these children Christ's love.

Tonight Laiken called me her "mommy". Not accidentally, but intentionally. I know this because she's always prefaced things with "let's pretend ok?"  This time was different. She was so sweet when she said, "You're my new mommy and I'm your daughter, right?"  "Sure sweet girl, you can call me whatever you want."  My heart melted. Of course I'll be your mom. Count on me to protect you, giggle in the mornings, play dress up, and paint your nails daily. Will my new name stay? Who knows.  Kids are kids and I may be "Aunt Kira" again in the morning. Or maybe not. Regardless, I loved hearing her say it all night long.  It was just kind of confirmation that we are doing something bigger than just being a fun vacation for these cute babes. We are hopefully impacting their lives forever. I wouldn't mind to keep them forever either. Time will tell, and until then, I'll just soak up every minute we have with them.

Oh hey, let's add to the chaos and announce that I'm apparently Laiken's head cheer coach. So if you see me out and I look frazzled or forget to call you back, just be patient. I promise I love you and want to hear all about your life!  I'm just doing good to remember to feed the dogs.  Brandon has taken on the daunting task of trying to fix the motor home that my parents gave us. We've already got a campsite up on Norris Lake, so he's determined to get it going and take the kids to camp in the next few weeks. They're dying to try it out and I know dad would love to come visit.  So hey, we just keep adding projects to our lives, because it's what we do!  Until next time, we'll just be tinkering with all of our junk and practicing "Bang, bang, choo choo train" everywhere we go.

It's obvious they have my heart, so let's just keep it this way. They've changed our lives forever, and I hope we can be their forever family. Love them so much. ❤️❤️❤️

Marriage: Year Two

I cannot believe that I married my best friend two years ago today. As I look back, I remember how stressed I was up until the day of, but then how relaxed I was on our special day. I remember that my daddy was too sick to attend, and I had to break the news to everyone via text that morning because I was too upset to even mention it. I had prayed and prayed the weather would be gorgeous, and it was perfect.  Then, the special moment came where I got to see Brandon before the ceremony. I'll never forget that big smile that beamed on his face. It was a very special and magical day that we shared before God and our closest friends and family.  A few pics from June 9th, 2012.

Us with our beautiful flower girls, Emma and Bella.

Our entire wedding party. Friends are such a blessing, and we have lots of 'em!

Jared reading my sweet daddy's letter to us. I'll post it one of these days, but even thinking about that letter makes me cry.

Caaaaake!!

After the wedding with my daddy. Just a few short hours later, he had emergency gall bladder surgery. Thankfully, he is much better now.

Love him.

Fast forward to now. We've been married two years, moved once, added another pup to the mix, and in the last two months, we've added two toddlers to our house. I'm not quite sure either of us expected to have two children under the age of five when we were 26 years old.  Some days I wake up and think, "what in the world are we doing with our lives?"  This isn't quite something we even really discussed doing before the actual day we took the kids into our home. I'm going to be honest. I miss the days of just us being able to spend time together. We still get alone time, but those days or even evenings are few and far between.

Let me tell you what I have noticed though.  Brandon loves these kids so much. He's always willing to play with them, do puzzles, or even just snuggle and watch a movie. (More than likely it's Frozen, which he's seen 28464 times and is still willing to watch it.). This man that I am blessed to call my husband voluntarily took in two children we barely knew because they needed to be loved on. We've become a cute little family over the last two months. Are we perfect?  Of course not. But we are blessed. I know we are following God's will for our lives and he has answered every prayer about these kids.

Here's another secret:  I'm afraid we will have to send them home. I can't get into details, but of course their parents want them back. My besties know I've been struggling over this for a few weeks.  I'm terrified that I won't be able to be there to protect them, hold their hand at the dentist, or tickle them before bedtime.  Know what else I've learned?  God has a plan. There's a reason we have these children in our lives right now. It may not be clear what the reason is, but we have to focus on the task at hand. It's not my job to fret over the future, but to just hold fast to the fact that God is in control.  So for however long we have these babies, whether it's a few short months or much longer, we are committed to taking care of them and showing them the love of Jesus.

So here's to many, many more crazy years of marriage with my best friend. He's always been able to make me laugh and knows when to just let me cry it out after a long, hard day. I am so so blessed to be married to my sweet man, Brandon Lawson.

I am lucky enough to call him my husband. I love you, Mr. Lawson!

Spring is finally here!!

We've had an eventful few days!  This post actually won't be all about the kiddies. To all of you who are like, "Enough with the kids pics!, already!", well, I can't promise I won't sneak a few in!  Sorry!  It's our new life!

Wednesday I was blessed to be able to take Haley to see Cirque du Soleil with the free tickets we won through the Big Brother program. It was phenomenal!  She loved it!!

Friday and Saturday I had the stomach bug....that was an event in and of itself, considering I had two kiddies in tow all day Friday!  We made it through a rough doctor's office visit and to get ice cream for being big kids and taking our checkups like champs.

Waiting to see the doctor during our 3 hour visit. We had to make it fun, because three hours at the doctor??  Kids get restless. Tell me they're not hilarious.

First froyoz trip!

Issak got a haircut too. Doesn't he look handsome?

By the time we got home Friday night, I was done. Y'all. The stomach bug is violent. Just don't get it. Remember my post to everyone in the winter about the flu?  And to please wash your hands?  Well....this momma is here to say, "Wash your hands!"  For those questioning my cleanliness, I do wash regularly, I must have just picked up someone's bug.  Thank goodness for a mother who lives right down the road and is a nurse. She saved the day with the meds!  Saturday I still didn't feel great, but it was a lot better than Friday.

Saturday we took the kids to an Easter egg hunt and were busy bees with other things.

Then, Brandon's grandparents were gracious enough to have a slumber party with the kids Saturday night so we could have the night to ourselves to grab dinner. It was so nice!  We spent Sunday morning sleeping in, eating some breakfast, and preparing for the big wedding shower/cookout we had for our friends Lindsey and Josh. This is the first time we've been alone without the kids since we got them. It was nice to relax, but I'm not going to lie, I missed them!

My sweet in-laws were so sweet to let us host the shower at their amazing home. Shout out to them!  Thank you so much!  Jess, Chelsey, and I met over there and got everything together for what seemed to be the most perfect pretty day for an outdoor celebration.

The bride and her maids (minus Ashley-we missed you!!). Besties!

I can't believe this is the only pic I got of those lovebirds all day!  It was picnic themed and we just had hamburgers. The boys played cornhole while the ladies just caught up on life. So much fun to just relax and celebrate the soon-to-be Horner's!  Linds and Josh have blessed us with an amazing friendship as couples and individually. I've watched them journey through friendship, dating, and now engagement. Their wedding will be here before we know it and I can't wait for them to be able to enjoy the gift of marriage.  God has big plans for them and I love seeing it all unfold.

Before their wedding though, we get to celebrate a little more and head to the beach. I cannot believe we go to Charleston in just a few short weeks while the boys will be in Myrtle Beach!  Hooray for a mini vacay with the girls!

I just love this pic of Brandon and I. We haven't taken any pics of just us since we got the kids, so here we are, working on almost a month of parenthood together and almost two years of wedded bliss. Here's to many, many more!

Parenthood: Week 2

Sooooo hey, we've been parents for two and a half weeks!  Life has been CRAZZZZYYYY!!!  But it's also been super fulfilling. Here's what we've learned.   (In list format because we all know I'm Type A and LOOOVEEE lists!)

1. Life can change in an instant. I've depended on Brandon more in the last two weeks than I have in a long time. Be a team!!  Teamwork is amazing.  Parenting is so much better that way. I see people who parent against each other or even cut each other down. It's so sad.  Teamwork makes everything in marriage better, including parenthood.

2. Have faith that God will provide. We've been incredibly blessed in very unexpected ways. He is amazing and has touched our hearts in very special ways. I'm overwhelmed by God's grace. God is so very good, all the time and all the time, God is good.

3. Some people don't want to have children and I always wondered why. Now I understand. Don't get me wrong, we want children eventually (maybe even sooner after this ordeal is over or whatever) but now I understand why kids aren't for everyone. If you want kids, you have to be ready to deal with messes, chaos, and accidents along with all kinds of fun. It's ok, we go with the flow and pick up or fix things....but I understand why some people don't want kids. Like I said though, if I've learned anything through this, it just makes me have a stronger desire to have kids one day.

There are probably many more things I've learned, but I'm tired and I feel that a 3-item list is sufficient. (Kind of like how you learn in school that for outlines, "every I has a II" and "every A has a B".)

It's kind of crazy, but I find myself wondering while I'm working what the kids are doing at school. If they're having fun, if their lunch is yummy, who their friends are, etc.  I get Fridays off with the kids, so that's great, but this has made me realize how much I'd love to just stay home and teach my babies letters and numbers and all kinds of fun things more than just one weekday per week. But, since this was very unplanned on our part (but perfectly planned by Jesus) we just take our workdays in stride until we make it to the weekend.  The kids love school and I think it's great for them to learn in a formal educational environment.

My husband is an incredible father and I've been amazed to watch how easily this whole thing has come to him. The kids love him and I think he's pretty special too. We don't know how long this road will last, but regardless, I know God put us here for a reason. To change these babies lives for the better. So here we are. 26 and parents to some toddlers. Our lives are crazy and chaotic, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Some pics for the road because hey, it's what parents do. We think our kids are the cutest. 😊
